Sheikh Abdul Rahman Zakaria Inaugurated as Ashanti Regional Chief Imam

Sheikh Abdul Rahman Zakaria has officially assumed the role of Ashanti Regional Chief Imam in a grand ceremony held in Kumasi and supervised by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu.

This significant event comes after the passing of the former chief imam, Sheikh Abdul Mumin Haroun, who led the Muslim community in the region for 13 years.

The inauguration coincided with the final funeral rites of the late Sheikh Abdul Mumin Haroun, who passed away on December 17, 2024, at the age of 74 following a brief illness at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi. Dignitaries from across the nation, including politicians, religious leaders, and traditional chiefs, gathered to honour the occasion, which marked a new chapter of leadership for Muslims in the Asante Kingdom.

The Muslim community in the Ashanti Region has high hopes for Sheikh Abdul Rahman Zakaria. Beyond leading prayers and offering spiritual guidance, he is tasked with fostering unity among the diverse Muslim population in the region. This unity is expected to transcend tribal, sectarian, and political boundaries, creating a cohesive and harmonious community.

Additionally, the new Chief Imam is anticipated to exemplify integrity, impartiality, and fairness, setting a standard for others to follow. Sheikh Abass Karaara was also introduced as the Deputy Regional Chief Imam, and he will assist in executing these responsibilities.

During the ceremony, Sheikh Abdul Rahman Zakaria was presented with a certificate of recognition by the National Chief Imam, signifying official endorsement of his appointment. The event highlighted the importance of the Chief Imam’s role in shaping the moral and spiritual fabric of the Muslim community.

The ceremony was attended by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and other government officials, underscoring the national significance of the occasion. Their presence highlighted the pivotal role of religious leadership in promoting peace and development.
