Sammi Awuku, Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), has stepped down from his position, effective Monday, January 13, 2024, following his election as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Akuapem North in the December 2024 elections.
In a resignation letter to President John Dramani Mahama, Awuku expressed his intent to dedicate himself fully to his new parliamentary responsibilities. “I wish to focus on my new role and serve my constituents effectively,” he explained. Awuku also requested the president appoint a successor to ensure a seamless transition and continued operations at the NLA.
Appointed by former President Nana Akufo-Addo in August 2021 and confirmed by the Public Services Commission in July 2022, Awuku’s tenure at the NLA was marked by transformative leadership. Under his stewardship, the NLA transitioned from a loss-making entity to a profitable and globally respected organisation.
His accomplishments include securing the role of Vice President of the African Lotteries Association (ALA) in March 2024.
He also received multiple accolades, such as the prestigious Overall Public Sector CEO of the Year Award at the Ghana CEO Summit and Excellence Awards in consecutive years and the CEO of the Year in the lottery industry in May 2024.
