Sam George Warns Media to Match Numbers with Quality

Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, has cautioned that Ghana’s vibrant broadcasting sector stands at a critical turning point, insisting that media houses must begin to pair their impressive numbers with higher quality, responsibility, and compliance.

Delivering a keynote at a national media forum, the minister underscored that with over 700 FM stations and more than 100 television channels, Ghana boasts one of Africa’s liveliest media spaces. Yet, he said, this vibrancy risks being undermined by non-operational stations, licensing breaches, poor content standards, and spectrum abuse.

“Broadcasting is not only a channel for information and entertainment; it is a pillar of national cohesion, a driver of innovation, and a safeguard of democratic participation. But our progress must go beyond numbers to quality and responsibility,” he charged.

The Minister revealed that the government, in collaboration with the National Communications Authority (NCA), is tightening audits of authorisations and spectrum monitoring to ensure only compliant and functional stations remain on air.

He urged broadcasters to meet their obligations—renew licences on time, pay fees, and uphold technical standards—warning that those who fail will lose their authorisations.

Samuel George further hinted at sweeping reforms to Ghana’s broadcasting framework, including a fresh review of the Broadcasting Bill, to reflect today’s digital realities where radio, television, and internet-based platforms now converge.

“We are at a crossroads. The decisions we take now will determine whether Ghana builds a resilient, responsible media landscape or sinks into disorder and decline,” he stated.

The minister concluded with a call for collective responsibility, reminding broadcasters of their democratic duty while affirming the government’s role as a regulator to ensure credibility, fairness, and public trust in the national media ecosystem.
