Road Contractors Laud Gov’t For Settling Some Arrears

The Association of Road Contractors has commended the Mahama administration for settling part of the arrears owed to road contractors.

The payments follow allocations in the 2025 budget aimed at clearing outstanding debts, enabling contractors to execute road projects across the country.

Speaking to Citi News, the immediate past Chairman of the Association, John Afful, confirmed that a significant portion of arrears has already been paid and expressed hope that the government will continue to settle all outstanding debts to ensure smooth road construction.

“The initial assurance was that they would try and put some money to reduce the debt. Which we know that something has been done. You all heard the Minister of Roads saying that they have paid over GHS5 billion into areas of the projects that were outstanding and that they were pleading with the contractors to go to the site. That is very welcoming, and you could see that when you go round some contractors have already started working.

“Recently, the president announced that GHS 1 billion should be paid to the contractors. And their Road Fund Board also has some money, about 2.5 billion at the end of December, which they are also distributing to the contractors. At least something is being done, and if it continues like that, we will be grateful that the arrears will at least reduce for us.”

Looking ahead to 2026, John Afful expressed optimism that continued arrears payments would motivate contractors to work assiduously on road projects under the Big Push agenda, ultimately benefiting Ghanaians.
