KMA To Replace Static Billboards With Digital Advertising Boards From 2027

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) will begin transitioning from traditional static billboards to digital advertising boards in 2027 as part of efforts to modernise and regulate outdoor advertising in the metropolis.

According to a Facebook post by KMA on Monday, September 7, the Kumasi Mayor, Richard Ofori Boadi Agyemang, announced the plan during an engagement with 28 registered advertisers in the metropolis.

He said the current billboard system had become increasingly disorganised, with advertising structures of different sizes erected haphazardly along major roads.

According to him, the situation affects the aesthetics of the city and, in some cases, poses potential obstructions to motorists and pedestrians.

“For a city to thrive, there must be order," he said.

Under the new policy direction, the KMA intends to reduce the number of advertising boards across the city while introducing clear guidelines on their size, design and placement.

The Assembly will determine the number of billboards permitted along designated stretches and establish specific requirements for major corridors and strategic locations.

The new guidelines will cover areas including the Airport Roundabout, Sofoline, Ahodwo and Bekwai Roundabouts. Separate specifications will also apply to the Kumasi Zoo, Kejetia and the Central Business District.

The mayor also announced that no billboards would be permitted along the Ahodwo-Santasi stretch until the ongoing road dualisation project is completed.

He further warned that the Assembly would remove over-aged and dilapidated billboards, as well as advertising structures linked to outstanding payments.
