Ridge Hospital Assault Probe Report Due Monday, August 25

The committee set up by the Ministry of Health to investigate the alleged assault on health workers at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge) is expected to submit its report on Monday, August 25, 2025.

This was revealed by Tony Goodman, Head of Communications at the Ministry, during an appearance on The Big Issue on Saturday, August 23.

According to him, the committee—constituted at the directive of Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh—has completed its work and is on schedule to present its findings.

“By yesterday, we were ready with the report. By Monday, the team will submit the report to the minister. The committee looked into the system issues, the cause of the delay, and what exactly happened at the hospital,” Mr. Goodman explained.

The committee was tasked with conducting a fact-finding inquiry following public uproar over a viral video showing a violent altercation between relatives of a patient and medical staff at Ridge Hospital’s emergency department.

The Health Minister last week gave the committee a one-week deadline, urging them to probe not only the incident but also systemic issues contributing to tensions in the hospital’s emergency unit.

The video sparked widespread debate about the safety of healthcare professionals, especially those working in high-pressure environments like emergency wards.

Meanwhile, Rejoice Tsotso Bortei, a nurse at Ridge Hospital who was allegedly assaulted during the chaos, has filed a GHS 7 million civil lawsuit against “Ralph De Fellow Ghanaian” for physical assault and defamation.

The lawsuit adds a legal dimension to the ongoing controversy, with health sector stakeholders warning that the assault has set a worrying precedent for the treatment of medical professionals in Ghana.

The Ministry of Health has assured the public that it will act on the committee’s recommendations once the report is submitted. Stakeholders, including health worker unions, have expressed hope that the findings will lead to tighter security measures and reforms to protect frontline staff.
