Removal of Chief Justice ‘Well Orchestrated and Well Executed’ – Kpemka

Former Deputy Attorney-General Joseph Kpemka has condemned the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, warning that the action could destabilise Ghana’s democratic institutions.

President John Dramani Mahama on Monday, September 1, 2025, announced the Chief Justice’s dismissal in line with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution. A statement from the Presidency explained that the decision followed recommendations of a committee set up under Article 146(6) to investigate a petition filed by a Ghanaian citizen, Daniel Ofori. The removal took immediate effect.

But speaking on Akwatia Watch on Channel One TV with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Kpemka accused the government of political witch-hunting.

“I’m not surprised at all with the way things were done. Some of us foresaw that it was over, and indeed it is over. Right from day one, the idea has been that when the NDC wins power, the Chief Justice will be removed from office, and that has been done… Perfectly so, it’s being well-orchestrated and well-executed,” he said.

Kpemka stressed that the move risks setting a dangerous precedent that future governments could exploit.

“What has happened will be the death of our democracy. It will be repeated,” he warned, calling for a constitutional amendment to prevent politically motivated removals of chief justices.

The removal of Justice Torkornoo — who was appointed in June 2023 — marks the first time in Ghana’s history that a sitting Chief Justice has been dismissed under constitutional provisions.
