Prof. Mike Oquaye to Chair NPP Committee Probing 2024 Electoral Defeat

Former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Oquaye, has been appointed to lead an 11-member committee tasked with investigating the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the 2024 general elections.

The party’s National Council announced the committee’s formation as part of efforts to assess and address the factors that contributed to the defeat.

The committee, chaired by Prof. Oquaye, has three months to deliver its findings and recommendations. Its terms of reference include a review of the party’s internal elections, campaign strategy, and other structural and operational issues that might have impacted the NPP’s electoral performance.

Prof. Mike Oquaye, a seasoned politician and respected academic, brings decades of experience to this critical role.

His leadership is expected to provide the committee with the necessary insight and objectivity to conduct a thorough evaluation of the NPP’s strategies and challenges.

General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua outlined the key objectives of the committee, which include:

  • Evaluating the NPP’s internal electoral processes.
  • Analysing campaign strategies and messaging.
  • Identifying key challenges that led to the loss.
  • Proposing solutions to rebuild the party and position it for future electoral success.

The committee’s establishment follows the NPP’s loss to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Former President John Dramani Mahama won the presidency with 6,328,397 votes (56.55%), defeating the NPP’s candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who garnered 4,657,304 votes (41.61%).

The NDC also achieved a commanding majority in Parliament, securing over 180 seats, including key constituencies previously held by the NPP.

Prof. Oquaye’s leadership of the committee is seen as a vital step in the NPP’s efforts to regroup and realign. The findings are expected to serve as a blueprint for addressing internal challenges and enhancing the party’s organisational and electoral strategies.

The NPP’s leadership has emphasised the importance of this review process, expressing confidence in Prof. Oquaye’s ability to guide the committee to deliver actionable recommendations.
