In his first address after being sworn in as Ghana’s president, John Dramani Mahama promised immediate and decisive actions to address the country’s economic challenges and stressed the importance of national unity in overcoming these hurdles.
Speaking on January 8, 2025, Mahama acknowledged the difficult circumstances the nation faces but expressed unwavering determination to restore stability and ensure prosperity for all Ghanaians.
President Mahama’s inaugural speech focused on four critical priorities: the stabilisation of the economy, improving the business climate, implementing governance reforms, and tackling corruption. These areas, he emphasised, will be the cornerstone of his administration’s efforts to improve the nation’s future.

Recognising the economic challenges Ghana faces, including inflation, rising debt, and a struggling currency, President Mahama vowed to take bold and strategic actions to stabilise the economy. He noted that restoring economic health is essential for ensuring long-term growth and creating opportunities for all citizens. “Our economy is at a turning point, and we must act quickly and decisively to restore stability,” he said.
Mahama also highlighted his administration’s focus on creating an environment that encourages business growth and investment. He stressed that a stable and flourishing business environment is crucial for job creation and economic growth. “We must unlock opportunities for businesses to thrive, which will ultimately benefit every Ghanaian,” he said.
The President underscored the need for governance reforms to ensure transparency, accountability, and effective state management. He outlined plans for constitutional and institutional reforms aimed at strengthening Ghana’s democratic processes. Ensuring that the government serves the people and remains accountable to them would be a top priority for his administration, Mahama affirmed.
“We need a reset in our faith in the institutions that serve us,” he remarked. “We must ensure that our public institutions are efficient and accountable, so they work for the benefit of all Ghanaians.”
Addressing corruption, Mahama promised continued efforts to root out corruption and ensure that public funds are used transparently. His administration, he said, would make public officials accountable for their actions, leading to a more efficient and honest government.
One of the most significant aspects of President Mahama’s speech was his emphasis on national unity. He called for Ghanaians to work together to overcome the nation’s challenges, regardless of their political affiliations, backgrounds, or social statuses. He stressed the need for collective efforts to achieve progress.
“We need to build a Ghana where every citizen is empowered, where no one is left behind,” Mahama said. “Unity is the foundation of our strength, and together, we can rebuild this nation.”
The President also reiterated his commitment to empowering women and youth, ensuring equal opportunities for all Ghanaians. He pointed out that inclusivity and fairness would be central to his government’s policies, particularly in opening up avenues for youth employment and supporting women’s participation in economic and political activities.
In closing, President Mahama invited Ghanaians to envision the future they want for the country, urging them to come together in building a nation that future generations will be proud of. He appealed to the public to renew their faith in Ghana’s potential and in the country’s leadership.
“We must think about the Ghana we want to live in, the Ghana we want to leave behind for our children,” he said. “This is a responsibility we all share.”
