Prank Calls Dropped Over 126,000 in First Half of 2025 After Public Crackdown- GNFS

Prank calls to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have seen a sharp decline of 34.77% in the first half of 2025, dropping from 364,020 in 2024 to 237,470—a development the service attributes to intensive public education and legal sensitisation efforts.

Divisional Officer Grade Two (DO II) Desmond Ackah, Head of Public Relations at the GNFS, revealed this during an interview on Hot FM’s Morning Drive with Nana Addie Kwame, popularly known as De Kay.

He described the reduction as a “major breakthrough” in the fight against the misuse of emergency hotlines, which has long hindered timely response to real fire emergencies.

“The consistent awareness campaigns and strong legal messaging are paying off,” he stated. “We have been deliberate in educating the public on the dangers prank calls pose—not just to the fire service but to lives and properties across the country.”

In addition to the drop in prank calls, the GNFS reported that a total of 3,595 fire incidents were recorded between January and June 2025, compared to 3,576 cases in the same period last year. Though this represents a 0.53% increase—just 19 more cases—officials say proactive measures have helped minimise the damage.

Significantly, properties worth over GHS 203 million were salvaged within the reporting period, underscoring the impact of improved fire response and public collaboration.

DO II Ackah urged the public to continue cooperating with the service and called on community leaders, schools, and media platforms to sustain the momentum of education campaigns.

He stressed that reducing prank calls not only saves resources but also improves emergency response times, potentially saving lives.

“The fewer the prank calls, the faster we can reach real victims,” he emphasised.
