Defense Minister-designate Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah has outlined a comprehensive plan to revamp mental health care for Ghanaian military personnel, prioritizing support for those grappling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other psychological challenges.
Appearing before the Parliamentary Appointments Committee on January 28, 2025, Dr. Omane Boamah, a physician by profession, stressed the critical need for reforms to address the emotional and mental toll of military service.
Sharing his personal connection to the military, he revealed that his family includes two veterans, whose experiences shaped his understanding of the challenges soldiers face. “I remember growing up, hearing their stories. One of them even broke down in tears recalling the loss of a comrade during operations. These memories linger, and they underscore the need for structured mental health care in the armed forces,” he said.
The minister-designate promised to collaborate with the ministries of Health and Education to bolster mental health services within the Ghana Armed Forces. His proposals include training dedicated mental health professionals for military service and creating systems to provide long-term psychological support for soldiers and their families.
Dr. Omane Boamah acknowledged the growing prevalence of PTSD among soldiers, often stemming from exposure to combat, peacekeeping missions, and high-stress environments.
He noted that without proper support, these challenges could lead to severe personal and professional consequences.
Military personnel are often expected to function under immense pressure, yet their mental health needs remain underserved. “We must create an environment where they feel supported, not just physically but mentally,” he emphasized.
He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to making mental health care a cornerstone of his agenda if approved as defense minister. “A stronger, healthier military is not only crucial for national security but also a moral obligation to those who dedicate their lives to protecting our nation.”
