NPP Accuses NDC of Fuelling Bawku Tensions for Political Gain

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of deliberately stoking tribal tensions in Bawku for electoral advantage, describing the situation in the conflict-ridden area as “an unprecedented crisis.”

Addressing a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, July 29, Mr. Kodua alleged that then-presidential candidate John Mahama sought to politicise the instability in Bawku ahead of the 2024 general elections.

“The then candidate Mahama made several pronouncements and wanted to take advantage of the crisis in Bawku by accusing the then government, led by His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, that when the NDC comes to power, the Bawku crisis will be resolved,” he said.

Mr. Kodua claimed that incidents leading up to the 2024 elections suggest a deliberate effort by the NDC to inflame ethnic divisions in the area.

“If we see or realise issues that happened in Bawku prior to the 2024 elections, we can tell that indeed the NDC orchestrated several tribal issues in Bawku,” he said. “That is why we find ourselves in this unprecedented crisis.”

Despite the allegations, the NPP General Secretary reaffirmed his party’s commitment to peace and national unity, expressing readiness to support any government-led initiatives to end the long-standing conflict.

“For the sake of our democracy, for the sake of people’s lives that matter, we are ever ready to assist the government in finding a lasting solution in Bawku,” Mr. Kodua noted.

He urged the NDC government to prioritise national interest above political considerations in dealing with the crisis.

“We are calling on the NDC government to treat this matter as a matter of national interest and shield away their political tendencies and interests,” he appealed.
