New BoG governor can’t engage in official duties – Afenyo-Markin to Mahama

The Minority in Parliament has raised concerns over Dr. Johnson Asiamah assuming official duties as Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) before securing formal approval.

Dr. Asiamah was nominated by President John Dramani Mahama on January 31, 2025, to take over from Dr. Ernest Addison, who has requested to proceed on leave ahead of his retirement on March 31, 2025. Dr. Addison has served as governor since April 2017, completing two full terms.

However, in a letter to President Mahama dated February 4, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin challenged Dr. Asiamah’s immediate assumption of office, citing constitutional concerns due to the current absence of the Council of State.

“Your Excellency, it is my considered view that Dr. Johnson Asiamah should refrain from engaging in official duties at the Bank of Ghana until his nomination has been duly approved by the Council of State. While awaiting confirmation, he can seek any necessary briefings outside the formal assumption of office,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

The Minority insists that due process must be followed to maintain the integrity of state institutions. It remains to be seen how the presidency and relevant authorities will respond to these concerns.
