Nana Akufo-Addo and I Have Always Shared a Deep Mutual Respect—Mahama

In a heartfelt moment during his swearing-in ceremony on January 7, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama reflected on his long-standing relationship with former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, describing it as one rooted in mutual respect and understanding.

President Mahama noted that despite their political differences, the bond between the two leaders has always been guided by a shared commitment to the welfare of Ghanaians.

“We began our national political careers together in Parliament in 1996, and over the years, Nana Akufo-Addo and I have always shared a deep mutual respect. Our interactions, even during the most intense political contests, have been marked by warmth and a shared focus on Ghana’s progress,” Mahama said.

The President recounted their unique shared history, including the transitions of power between their administrations. “It feels fitting that it is Nana Akufo-Addo and I who have twice shared this stage during pivotal moments in Ghana’s democratic journey,” he remarked, referencing their roles in the 2017 and 2025 transitions.

Mahama also highlighted the importance of maintaining civility and respect in Ghana’s political discourse, emphasising that leadership must always prioritise national unity over partisan divides.

President Mahama expressed admiration for Akufo-Addo’s statesmanship and contributions to Ghana, commending his predecessor’s dedication to the nation.

“Even as we represented opposing visions, our interactions have always been underpinned by the understanding that leadership is about service to the people. This mutual respect sets a standard for democratic leadership,” he said.

As he embarks on his second term, Mahama pledged to continue fostering an atmosphere of respect and collaboration, both within government and across political lines. He called on Ghanaians to embrace unity and work collectively toward addressing the country’s challenges.

“Our shared history as leaders is a reminder that Ghana’s success depends on our ability to come together, respect one another, and focus on what truly matters—the welfare of our people,” Mahama concluded.
