NACOC intercepts 73 slabs of suspected cocaine at Swiss Port; 4 arrested

In a major breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking, the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has arrested four individuals following the seizure of a large consignment of suspected cocaine at the Swiss Port in Accra.

The operation, which occurred on Wednesday, April 23, was the result of an intelligence-led investigation targeting illicit drug networks using Ghana’s ports as transit points.

According to NACOC officials, a total of seventy-three (73) slabs of a concealed substance, believed to be cocaine, were discovered during routine cargo inspections. The suspected narcotics, weighing approximately 89.74 kilograms, were being prepared for export to the Netherlands.

Sources close to the investigation indicate that the consignment was disguised among legitimate cargo, a tactic often used by traffickers to evade detection. However, the timely intervention of NACOC operatives thwarted the smuggling attempt.

The four suspects, whose identities are being withheld pending further investigations, are currently in NACOC custody and are expected to assist with ongoing enquiries.

A spokesperson for the Commission emphasised that the arrest forms part of broader efforts to tighten security across all ports of entry and clamp down on transnational drug trafficking.

“This interception is a clear indication that Ghana will not be used as a conduit for illicit drugs,” the spokesperson said. “We will continue to work with our international partners to dismantle drug networks and bring perpetrators to justice.”

Authorities say the seized substance will undergo laboratory testing to confirm its composition. If proven to be cocaine, the street value of the consignment is expected to run into several millions of Ghana cedis.

The latest bust adds to a growing list of high-profile drug interceptions at Ghanaian ports in recent years, reinforcing calls for enhanced surveillance, improved port security infrastructure, and stronger collaboration with global narcotics enforcement agencies.

NACOC is urging the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities that may be linked to drug trafficking.
