MTN Heroes of Change Award Transformed Lives of Abuse Survivors – Dr Angela Dwamena-Aboagye
Winner of MTN Heroes of Change Season 7, Dr Angela Dwamena-Aboagye, Executive Director of The Ark, has revealed that the support received through the initiative has transformed the lives of vulnerable women and children, demonstrating the life-changing impact of recognising and investing in community changemakers.
Speaking at the launch of MTN Heroes of Change Season 8, the Executive Director of The Ark Foundation Ghana expressed gratitude to MTN Ghana for sustaining what she described as one of the country's most impactful corporate social responsibility initiatives.
Dr Dwamena-Aboagye said the programme has consistently recognised ordinary Ghanaians whose extraordinary commitment to serving others often goes unnoticed.
"Heroes of Change" shines a light on ordinary Ghanaians doing extraordinary things in their communities. Although we may be described as ordinary people, the work being done by every Hero of Change is anything but ordinary. It is driven by humanity, compassion and a genuine desire to improve the lives of others," she said.
Reflecting on her experience as the overall winner of Season 7, she described the recognition as both a privilege and a responsibility, noting that every finalist had an inspiring story of sacrifice and service.
"I kept asking myself how so many remarkable people could be quietly transforming lives without seeking recognition. To be selected among them was both an honour and a responsibility," she said.
Dr Dwamena-Aboagye disclosed that the financial support received through the programme enabled The Ark Foundation Ghana to renovate its transit shelter, which provides temporary accommodation, counselling and rehabilitation for women and children who have suffered abuse, exploitation, human trafficking and other forms of violence.
According to her, the renovated facility has significantly improved the quality of care available to survivors and restored hope to many vulnerable beneficiaries.
"The renovation has transformed the lives of many of our beneficiaries. Every year, vulnerable women and children pass through our shelter carrying deep emotional wounds. Today, many of them are rebuilding their lives with renewed hope and dignity," she stated.
She added that while financial support may sometimes appear modest, timely assistance can make an enormous difference in changing lives.
"Sometimes it does not take a great deal of money to help someone rise from the ashes, but the support must come at the right time. For us, MTN's investment has been life-changing, and we remain sincerely grateful," she said.
Dr Dwamena-Aboagye also praised her fellow Season 7 finalists, saying they have continued to expand their impact across Ghana in areas including education, healthcare, economic empowerment and community development.
She said the finalists have remained connected, encouraging one another and celebrating each other's achievements long after the competition ended.
During the event, Dr Dwamena-Aboagye invited all Season 7 finalists to join her in presenting a citation of appreciation to the MTN Foundation on behalf of the group.
The citation commended the Foundation for recognising grassroots changemakers and providing a platform that has amplified their voices and strengthened their work.
"The Heroes of Change platform has amplified our voices, strengthened our work and inspired us to continue making a difference. Through its commitment to education, health and economic empowerment, the MTN Foundation has empowered individuals and organisations to expand their impact and inspire many others to serve," she said.
She thanked MTN Ghana and the MTN Foundation for believing in community leaders and investing in initiatives that continue to create lasting social impact across the country.
Dr Dwamena-Aboagye concluded by expressing hope that MTN Heroes of Change Season 8 would uncover and support many more unsung heroes whose selfless efforts are transforming lives in communities across Ghana.
"May Heroes of Change continue to discover, celebrate and support the many unsung heroes who are quietly transforming lives every day," she said.
