MoMo Fraud: Our Staff Can’t ccess your PIN – Godwin Tamakloe

The Chief Risk and Compliance Officer of Mobile Money Limited, Godwin Tamakloe, has firmly denied allegations that mobile money service personnel are complicit in the recent surge of fraud cases reported by customers across the country.

Appearing on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Friday, May 2, Tamakloe dismissed suspicions that agents or staff of Mobile Money Limited have access to customer PINs or collaborate with fraudsters to siphon funds from user accounts.

“Our staff do not have access to your PINs. The PIN is system-generated. It is not that somebody sits there and says that I want to reset my PIN and they key in the figures, and then it comes to you. It is a button, so when you click on that button, the system sends an SMS to you, and the PIN is in the message,” he explained.

He further emphasized that the mobile money system is intentionally designed to protect customer data, putting full control of PINs in the hands of users. “We even go ahead to tell you that you can change the PIN to any number that you want, so when the system gives you the number, you can change it,” Tamakloe added.

His remarks come amid heightened public anxiety following a string of fraud cases, the most prominent being a viral video from April 16, in which a distressed woman claimed to have lost over GHS 11,000 to scammers. The woman insisted she had never disclosed her PIN, prompting widespread speculation that mobile money insiders might be involved.

In response, MTN Ghana also issued a statement assuring customers that funds cannot be withdrawn from mobile wallets unless sensitive personal information—like a PIN—has been compromised by the user.

Tamakloe urged the public to remain vigilant and avoid sharing personal information under any circumstances, while encouraging victims of fraud to accurately report how they were deceived to help trace the fraudsters and prevent future incidents.

The mobile money industry, which plays a critical role in Ghana’s financial ecosystem, continues to battle rising threats of cybercrime. However, company officials maintain that robust security measures and customer awareness remain the best defense against fraud.
