The minority in Parliament has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic Ghana Armed Forces helicopter crash that claimed eight lives—including two Cabinet ministers—calling for a united show of grief and a collective commitment to acts of national service in honor of the fallen.
In a statement signed by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin on Wednesday, August 6, the caucus described the loss as a “profound national tragedy that touches the very soul of our nation.”
Among the victims were Defense Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, and former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye.

Three Ghana Armed Forces personnel—Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah—also perished in the crash.
Afenyo-Markin paid glowing tribute to Dr. Omane Boamah and Dr. Murtala Mohammed, describing them as passionate and dedicated public servants whose commitment to Ghana’s progress transcended political lines.
“To the grieving families, our hearts go out to you in your darkest hour,” the statement read. “We stand with you and the entire nation as we mourn the loss of these gallant citizens who served with distinction.”
The Minority reaffirmed its solidarity with President John Dramani Mahama and urged Ghanaians to honor the victims by supporting the Armed Forces, safeguarding the environment, and working together to foster unity across the country.
“May their souls rest in perfect peace, and may their memories remain everlasting beacons of light,” the statement concluded.
The ill-fated Ghana Air Force Z-9 helicopter, which took off from Accra at 9:12 a.m. en route to Obuasi, crashed near Adansi Brofeyedu in the Ashanti Region, leaving the wreckage burnt beyond recognition. Preliminary reports suggest the aircraft may have struck a tree, with bad weather suspected as a possible factor.
National flags are flying at half-mast as investigations continue into one of the deadliest military aviation accidents in Ghana’s recent history.
