The Ministry of National Security has announced a ban on the use of drones at Black Star Square and its surrounding areas ahead of the inauguration of President-elect John Dramani Mahama on January 7, 2025.

The directive, detailed in a press release signed by Lily Fati Soale, Acting Chief Director for the Ministry of Information, prohibits the operation of all drones—whether recreational or commercial—during the event.

The measure is part of heightened security efforts to safeguard visiting dignitaries, attendees, and the general public.

The ban reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring the smooth and secure conduct of the high-profile ceremony. With thousands expected to gather at Black Star Square, the directive aims to eliminate potential risks associated with drone activities, including unauthorised surveillance or disruptions to the event.

The Ministry of National Security has called on all drone operators to respect the restriction and adhere to the established security protocols. Stakeholders and the general public have also been urged to cooperate fully to ensure the success of the inauguration.

“We are appealing to everyone to comply with this directive and support our efforts to create a safe environment for all,” the ministry emphasised.

In addition to the drone ban, heightened security measures, including increased police and military presence, are expected at the venue and surrounding areas. These steps are designed to guarantee the safety of national and international guests as President-elect Mahama takes the oath of office.

The government’s decision to impose the drone restriction underscores its proactive approach to ensuring public safety during significant national events.

The Ministry of National Security has assured the public of its preparedness to manage security concerns and facilitate a peaceful and dignified inauguration ceremony.
