Mahama Declares Three Days of National Mourning for Victims of Military Helicopter Crash

President John Dramani Mahama has declared three days of national mourning, beginning Thursday, August 7, 2025, in honour of the eight individuals who perished in Wednesday’s tragic military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the President also suspended all his scheduled activities and public engagements for the rest of the week as the nation grapples with what he described as an unprecedented national tragedy.

The Office of the Chief of Staff has directed that all national flags be flown at half‑mast across the country until further notice, symbolising the deep sorrow and unity of the Ghanaian people.

The crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District claimed the lives of two senior government officials—Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed—alongside:

  • Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
  • Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate
  • Dr Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
  • Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala
  • Flying Officer Manin Twum‑Ampadu
  • Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah

Preliminary reports indicate that the Ghana Armed Forces Z‑9 helicopter was en route from Accra to Obuasi when it went off radar and later crashed in a forested area. Search and rescue teams have since recovered the bodies of all onboard.

Tributes have poured in from political leaders, civil society, religious organisations, and international partners, with many describing the incident as one of Ghana’s darkest moments in recent history.

President Mahama called on all citizens to reflect on the lives and service of the departed and to remain united in the face of the tragedy.
