The Member of Parliament (MP) for Damongo, Samuel Abdulai Jinapor, has strongly denied allegations that he verbally attacked Klottey Korle MP, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, during a heated parliamentary session on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.
During the proceedings, a male voice was heard shouting, “Daughter of a murderer, sit down! Daughter of a murderer, sit down!” while Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin was addressing the chamber. The remark came amid intense debate on the 60th anniversary of the death of Joseph Boakye Danquah, a key figure in Ghana’s independence movement.
Tensions in the House escalated when Tamale Central MP, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, challenged what he described as exaggerated praise of JB Danquah’s legacy by the minority. The heated exchanges prompted the presiding Speaker, Andrew Asiamah, to restrict contributions to only parliamentary leadership, effectively silencing other MPs.
As Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings attempted to seek permission to contribute to the discussion, the Speaker overlooked her and allowed Afenyo-Markin to continue speaking, leading to further disorder in the chamber. It was during this commotion that the offensive remark was made, sparking widespread condemnation on social media.
Subsequent reports linked Jinapor to the outburst. However, speaking to journalists on Wednesday, February 5, the Damongo MP categorically denied making the statement, describing the claims as completely false and unfounded.
“Anybody who has followed my career and public engagements will attest to the fact that I do not speak in that manner. The words being attributed to me are not words I would ever use,” Jinapor stated.
He further explained that he was unaware of the comment until it began trending on social media. “I found out this morning when the video was brought to my attention. I don’t even speak across the aisle in parliament. If I want to contribute, I draw the attention of the Speaker before speaking. The allegations against me are completely false. I have the utmost respect for former President Rawlings,” he added.
Jinapor’s denial has sparked mixed reactions, with some MPs calling for a thorough review of the parliamentary footage to identify the person responsible for the offensive remarks. Meanwhile, the incident has reignited debates about decorum and respect in parliamentary proceedings.
