Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has ordered the immediate release of the Queen Mother of Kwahu, Nana Adwoa Gyemfua, following a controversial dawn operation at the Abene Palace on Monday, November 17.
He has also directed the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) to launch a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the raid, with a clear instruction that any officer found culpable will face strict sanctions.
The Palace of the Paramount Chief of the Kwahu Traditional Council was reportedly attacked around 4:00 a.m., when armed men dressed in police uniforms and claiming to be personnel from the National Security stormed the premises.

Residents said they heard gunshots from inside the palace shortly before the Queen Mother was allegedly whisked away.
The incident has thrown the community into shock, heightening security concerns amid ongoing tensions linked to chieftaincy disputes in the area.
Police presence has since been increased across Kwahu to ensure the safety of residents and visitors as investigations continue.
In a related development, Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III, the Kwahuhene, was reportedly arrested by police following the raid. Sources confirmed to Citi News that the operation was conducted by officers from the Police Headquarters and that gunfire was exchanged during the confrontation.
The arrest adds a new twist to the already complex security situation within the Kwahu Traditional Area.
Both the Nkawkaw and Kwahu Divisional Police Commands have denied knowledge of the operation, raising critical questions about coordination, chain of command, and whether the officers involved acted with proper authorisation.
The lack of communication has deepened concerns among residents and traditional authorities, who are demanding clarity and accountability from the police hierarchy.
The IGP’s swift intervention signals a move to restore confidence and prevent further escalation. The PPSB has been tasked to:
- Determine who authorised the operation
- Identify all personnel involved
- Establish whether due process was followed
- Recommend sanctions where necessary
More details are expected as the investigation progresses.
