“Helicopter Tours Won’t Stop the Floods” – A-Plus (VIDEO)
Gomoa Central MP, Hon. Kwame Asare Bediako, popularly known as A-Plus, has sharply criticised Ghana’s handling of recurring floods, saying aerial inspections and political statements will not stop future disasters unless the country fixes its broken drainage systems and enforces proper town planning.
Speaking during a Facebook Live broadcast after the recent floods that hit parts of Greater Accra, A-Plus argued that governments have spent years reacting to disasters instead of addressing the root causes.
According to him, leaders often visit affected areas, express sympathy and promise action, only for the same communities to be flooded again the following year.
“The president will fly a helicopter, look down, and feel sad, and that is all,” he said, insisting that emotional reactions alone cannot solve the crisis.
The Gomoa Central MP said the real problem is structural: drainage systems designed for a much smaller population, uncontrolled urban growth, and widespread construction in waterways.
He noted that many drainage networks were built when Ghana’s population was around six million, yet they are now expected to serve a country of more than 35 million people.
A-Plus also blamed weak town planning enforcement, arguing that people continue to build houses wherever they choose because zoning regulations are not strictly applied.
“Any country that does not have effective town planning cannot develop properly,” he said.
He acknowledged that demolishing buildings obstructing waterways would help reduce flooding but admitted that such action has become difficult because entire communities have already been established in those areas.
The MP further warned that pressure on infrastructure such as the Weija Dam could create even greater risks if not carefully managed during periods of heavy rainfall.
Despite his criticism of politicians, A-Plus urged Ghanaians to confront the reality that flooding is not caused by one government alone but by decades of poor planning, weak enforcement and rapid urbanisation.
He concluded that unless the country embraces long-term planning and tough decisions, the annual cycle of floods, destruction and political debate will continue.
