Greater Accra Regional Minister to Install 70% of Streetlights in 50 Days

Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo, has set an ambitious target to install 70% of streetlights across the region within her first 50 days in office.

The Shai Osudoku Member of Parliament (MP) made the announcement in an interview with journalists on Monday, addressing a long-standing issue of poor road visibility at night due to inadequate street lighting.

“Within my first 50 days in office, we will ensure that most of these issues are resolved. While it may not be entirely complete, we are committed to fixing at least 70% of them,” Ocloo stated, emphasising her administration’s dedication to improving public safety through better illumination on roads.

Motorists and residents in the region have frequently voiced concerns over the lack of streetlights, leading to visibility issues and heightened security risks. Despite a previous promise by the Akufo-Addo-led government to install 25,000 solar-powered streetlights across Greater Accra, the initiative has not been fully realised.

In response to the growing safety concerns, Ocloo assured the public that her administration would take a more proactive stance in addressing the issue. “We are going to enforce the law.

The task forces of the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), along with the security services, will be used to address this issue. We are committed to sustaining this initiative,” she added.

Beyond streetlighting, Ocloo also addressed the region’s ongoing flooding challenges. She acknowledged the importance of the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project, which has been working since 2019 to improve drainage systems, particularly around the Odaw basin in Accra.

The project is aimed at mitigating flooding in the region, a persistent issue for residents.

“We are working to fast-track this project, and it will resolve the flooding issues,” Ocloo assured.

In addition to infrastructure concerns, the minister highlighted the need for stricter enforcement of building permit regulations, particularly in light of ongoing construction activities in the region.

She stressed the importance of proper planning and regulation to ensure the safety and sustainability of urban development in Greater Accra.

Ocloo’s commitments come as part of her broader efforts to tackle infrastructure challenges in the region, with a focus on improving the quality of life for residents while addressing safety and environmental concerns.
