Gov't Urges UHAS to Introduce Digital Skills Training at Different Academic Levels
The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has urged the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) to structure digital skills training in a way that prepares students for the job market before they complete their studies.
He said the timing of the training was important, particularly for students approaching graduation, as it would allow them to apply newly acquired skills when entering professional practice.
Speaking during an engagement with university authorities in the Volta Region, Hon. Sam George welcomed UHAS’s proposed approach of introducing foundational digital literacy courses at the early stages of study and more specialised courses at higher levels.
He encouraged the university to ensure that students nearing graduation receive relevant training and certification while the knowledge is still fresh.
“I’m happy with the way you’re trying to segregate it, do the literacy bits at the early stages of campus, but as they’re about to be 400, 600, let’s begin to make them do those courses,” he said.
The Minister explained that the One Million Coders Programme was designed to supplement university education with practical and industry-relevant competencies that graduates could use in their respective professions.
He said areas such as data management, data analytics, artificial intelligence and prompt engineering were increasingly relevant to the modern workplace, including healthcare.
Sam George noted that the Ministry had already partnered with other universities to integrate the programme into their training arrangements and expressed optimism about working with UHAS on a similar initiative.
The university has indicated its interest in incorporating selected courses into its curriculum, subject to the appropriate internal approval processes.
The Minister’s comments came during a two-day working tour of the Volta Region with the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), focusing on One Million Coders Programme centres and rural telephony sites.
