Gov't Gives Rural Telephony Contractor 30 Days to Complete Outstanding Sites
The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has given the contractor responsible for Ghana’s rural telephony project a maximum of 30 days to complete all outstanding sites, warning that sanctions will follow if the deadline is missed.
The Minister said the contractor had already been paid in full, yet some sites remained incomplete despite the expiration of the original completion deadline.
Speaking to the media after a two-day tour of One Million Coders Programme (OMCP) centres and rural telephony sites in the Volta Region, Mr George said he had directed the administrator of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) to convene a meeting with the contractor and its subcontractors in Accra.
He said the meeting would address the outstanding works and concerns over reported disagreements between the contractor and subcontractors.
“I've heard stories about issues between the contractor and their subcontractor. That's not what the Ghanaian people are interested in. We've paid; give us our service,” he said.
According to the Minister, the 30-day deadline would begin after the scheduled meeting, after which the government would begin imposing surcharges if any sites remained incomplete.
Hon. Sam George said the government was determined to ensure that communities expected to benefit from the project received the services for which public funds had been committed.
He, however, cautioned that completing the current project would not mean every community in Ghana had been connected, as nearly 5,000 communities still required connectivity infrastructure.
