The Government of Ghana has launched a new digital application aimed at transforming the country’s shift toward renewable energy by simplifying the process for households, businesses and institutions to join the national net-metering programme.
The platform, unveiled in Accra on Thursday, enables consumers who generate electricity through solar PV systems to seamlessly feed surplus power into the national grid in exchange for credits—an arrangement expected to reduce energy costs and encourage wider adoption of clean power.
Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Richard Gyan-Mensah, described the web portal as a major leap in Ghana’s green-energy agenda.

“This user-friendly platform will enable homes, businesses and industry players to apply for smart meters for both captive and renewable-energy systems,” he said. “It will also allow us to track all solar installations nationwide.”
He emphasised that the initiative fits into the government’s broader commitment to diversify Ghana’s energy mix. The project enjoys strong backing from the Government of Ghana, the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Climate Investment Funds, and the Swiss Government.
Swiss Ambassador Simone Giger said the platform’s digital features will significantly improve document submission, system monitoring, reporting and data management, adding that this will enhance transparency and accountability across the renewable-energy value chain.
Acting Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission, Eunice Biritwum, noted that the application will eliminate long-standing administrative delays by improving coordination among key institutions, especially the Energy Commission and the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition.
The Country Manager of the African Development Bank Group, Eyerusalem Fasika, reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to Ghana’s energy transition, disclosing that AfDB has invested US$27 million into the country’s renewable-energy initiatives. The investment forms part of the ongoing mini-grid PV and net-metering project under the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition.
The rollout of the digital application is expected to accelerate national solar adoption by providing consumers with a faster, more efficient pathway to clean and affordable energy.
