Ghana Water Limited (GWL) in the Ashanti Region has intensified efforts to restore full water supply to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) following a crippling shortage that has disrupted medical services for over a week.
Though GWL confirms that some water is now reaching the facility, additional measures are being implemented to ensure a steady and sufficient supply.
The hospital’s Doctors Association recently announced the suspension of some surgical procedures due to the crisis, which has severely affected critical units such as the Orthopaedic and Emergency Directorates. Patients and staff have been struggling as sanitation and hygiene concerns mount.

The shortage stems from a major burst pipeline supplying parts of Kumasi, including KATH. While other areas are also impacted, GWL says it is prioritising the hospital’s needs.
GWL officials say they have begun directing available water flow to KATH while deploying tanker services to support supply.
“We started pushing water to the hospital on Thursday, March 27. By 9 am on Friday, they had received some supply, but pressure dropped later at 4 am. We’re using tankers from the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) to supplement, and we’re adjusting our system to direct more flow to KATH,” a GWL representative explained.
The company, however, warned that power challenges could affect their efforts.
Despite these interventions, the hospital remains under pressure, with medical staff calling for urgent solutions. Management has assured the public that it is working to mitigate the impact, but without a full restoration of supply, critical services will continue to suffer.
With no clear timeline for complete resolution, healthcare workers and patients at Ghana’s second-largest hospital remain in distress, hoping for swift action before conditions deteriorate further.
