Ghana Scales Down Independence Day Celebrations to Cut Costs

The government of President John Dramani Mahama has announced a scaled-down Independence Day celebration this year, moving the main parade to Jubilee House as part of efforts to reduce expenditure.

Addressing the media, the Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, disclosed that the government has suspended the rotational hosting of the event due to financial constraints.

He revealed that last year’s celebration in Ho cost the state GH¢15 million, an expense deemed unsustainable given the country’s current economic challenges.

“While the rotational celebrations were initiated with good intentions, President Mahama has instructed that they be put on hold to manage costs effectively. The review has shown that hosting the event outside Accra significantly increases expenses, which is not justifiable under present economic conditions,” Kwakye Ofosu stated.

He further explained that the government remains committed to marking Ghana’s Independence Day with significance but in a more cost-effective manner. “The president acknowledges the importance of this historic day, but he believes it is possible to commemorate it meaningfully without excessive spending,” he added.

The revised plan reflects the administration’s broader strategy to control non-essential expenditure while ensuring that national priorities remain the focus. Despite the scaled-down approach, the government reassures Ghanaians that the significance and spirit of Independence Day will be upheld.
