President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that the country is steadily emerging from the economic and social hardships it faced a year ago, declaring that Ghana is “rising again” after 12 months of reforms and prudent economic management.
In his New Year’s address to the nation on January 1, 2026, President Mahama said his administration inherited a nation in distress, characterised by a weak economy, high unemployment, deteriorating infrastructure, eroded public trust and widespread loss of hope.
He noted that although some analysts predicted the recovery would take a generation, his government placed confidence in the resilience of the Ghanaian people and moved swiftly to reverse the decline.

According to the President, the past year has seen significant progress, with inflation dropping sharply from over 23 per cent at the end of 2024 to a projected single-digit rate of about five per cent by the close of 2025.
He added that the cedi has achieved relative stability, placing Ghana among the world’s best-performing currencies in 2025.
President Mahama said economic growth is gaining momentum, creating new opportunities for the youth and restoring confidence in the business climate.
He pointed to rising domestic and foreign direct investment as clear signs of renewed trust in the economy and Ghana’s regained credibility with international partners.
He further disclosed that the government has successfully renegotiated the country’s debt obligations in a manner that safeguards national sovereignty while ensuring long-term sustainability.
The President also announced that Ghana has begun the process of exiting the International Monetary Fund programme, stressing that the country is doing so with dignity and as an equal partner, rather than as a dependent.
President Mahama urged Ghanaians to remain hopeful and united as the nation continues its journey of recovery and growth in the year ahead.
