GAF Recruitment Resumes Today After Deadly Stampede

Recruitment into the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) in the Greater Accra Region resumes today, Thursday, November 20, 2025, following a temporary suspension of the exercise after a deadly stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium claimed six lives on Wednesday, November 12.

The tragic incident prompted President John Dramani Mahama to immediately order a halt to the process, directing the military hierarchy to reassess crowd management strategies and overhaul safety procedures before allowing the exercise to continue.

Ahead of the resumption, the GAF says it has rolled out stringent crowd-control measures to ensure the safety of applicants.

A major change is the establishment of five separate screening centres across the region to reduce congestion at El-Wak and manage applicant flow more effectively.

Director-General of Public Affairs at GAF, Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, said the revised system will strictly limit the number of applicants allowed into the screening grounds each day.

According to her, only 1,200 applicants will undergo screening daily.

“The numbers that will be at El-Wak will not be more than 1,200. This is because we are going to have two groups there, each made up of 600 potential recruits.”

Captain Arhin explained that the recruitment process will now run for at least five days, conducted in carefully managed phases to avoid overcrowding.

The first phase includes verification of applicant information, followed by physical and body checks.

“The screening is in phases, and this is phase one, where we verify their information and do the body checks,” she said.

Background

The November 12 stampede — triggered by overwhelming crowd numbers — sparked national shock and renewed calls for safer recruitment procedures. Families of the deceased have since urged authorities to ensure no applicant loses their life in the pursuit of national service.
