Gabon to Inaugurate First National Data Center on June 30
Gabon plans to inaugurate its first national data centre on June 30, 2026, at the Nkok Special Economic Zone (SEZ) near Libreville. The date was announced on Monday, after a meeting between Digital Economy Minister Mark-Alexandre Doumba and project officials.
The facility is intended to strengthen the country's digital sovereignty by enabling public institutions, businesses and individuals to host their data within Gabon rather than relying on infrastructure located abroad.
According to ST Digital, the company leading the project, the data centre has been built to international Tier 3 standards, a certification that ensures high service availability through redundant power and cooling systems.
The facility will provide colocation, cloud computing and AI-ready infrastructure designed to support a growing range of artificial intelligence applications. ST Digital said the data centre was developed with a strong focus on energy efficiency, reflecting increasing global concerns about the power consumption of digital infrastructure.
The project is part of the digital transformation strategy being implemented by the Gabonese government. In recent years, authorities have launched a series of initiatives to modernise public administration, expand digital services and strengthen personal data protection. The ability to host data locally is viewed as an important element of these efforts, helping support the digitalisation of both government operations and private-sector activities.
The project also comes at a time when several African countries are seeking to reduce their dependence on data centres located in Europe, the United States and South Africa. Local hosting offers greater control over strategic data, lower latency for digital services and reduced costs associated with international data transfers. The initiative is also expected to strengthen Gabon's appeal as an investment destination in a region where advanced digital infrastructure remains limited.
Beyond its role in strengthening digital sovereignty, authorities expect the data centre to contribute to economic growth. Local businesses, banks, telecommunications operators, public institutions and startups will gain access to nearby hosting and cloud services priced and delivered locally. The project could also help create new opportunities in cybersecurity, data management and artificial intelligence.
Its long-term success, however, will depend on attracting a broad customer base. With a population of around 2.5 million, Gabon's domestic market alone may not be sufficient to ensure the facility's profitability.
ST Digital aims to establish Nkok as a regional digital hub serving governments and businesses across Central Africa, where demand for cloud services and sovereign digital infrastructure continues to grow.
