Four Arrested After Deadly Shooting Chaos at Asamankese Funeral

The Eastern South Regional Police Command has arrested four persons in connection with a violent shooting incident that disrupted the burial and funeral rites of six family members at Asamankese in the Eastern Region on Sunday, October 26, 2025.

The clash, which occurred near the Chief’s Palace, left six civilians and three police officers injured, plunging the town into chaos and panic.

According to a statement signed by DSP David Fianko-Okyere, Head of Public Affairs for the Eastern South Regional Police Command, officers received intelligence that some individuals were transporting guns and live cartridges into a room close to the palace.

Acting swiftly on the tip-off, police stormed the location and arrested Isaac Ntim, Nana Yaw Zenyo, Bismark K. K. Adam (29), and Buaben Richard (25).
A search of the premises uncovered one single-barrel gun, 84 live AAA cartridges, seven cutlasses, and two knives.

However, the arrest triggered violent resistance from a group of irate youth who attacked police officers with stones and other weapons, injuring three officers on their heads and hands.

The mob also vandalised two police vehicles, smashing their windscreens and side glasses.
Reports indicate that the youth blocked the Asamankese–Akroso road and fired gunshots indiscriminately, claiming that the bereaved family’s decision to bury their deceased relatives in the royal cemetery was against traditional norms.

Six civilians — David Odame (28), Musah Gyakweli (29), Patrick Ofosu, Obeng Emmanuel (18), Asamoah Sey (18), and another unidentified individual — sustained gunshot wounds during the melee.

All victims are currently receiving treatment at the Asamankese Government Hospital, where police have mounted security to prevent further disturbances.

Police say calm has since been restored to the Asamankese township following the deployment of reinforced patrols and surveillance operations.

“The public is assured of a robust security strategy in place to protect lives and property and allow residents to go about their normal duties.”
the statement read.

The four suspects are currently in police custody, assisting investigators to determine the source of the weapons and the circumstances leading to the violent confrontation.

Authorities have vowed to bring all perpetrators to justice and maintain peace in the community as investigations continue.
