Fix the Country Defies Government Plea, Presses Ahead with Anti-Galamsey Vigil

The Fix the Country movement has defied a government appeal to suspend its latest protest, pressing ahead with a vigil at Revolution Square in Accra on Sunday, September 21, 2025, to demand tougher action against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

The vigil, part of the movement’s long-standing campaign against environmental destruction, drew dozens of activists who vowed to sustain their pressure until the government demonstrates clear commitment to ending the menace.

Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency, Mustapha Gbande, visited the venue to persuade organisers to call off the event. He explained that President John Dramani Mahama had travelled to New York for the United Nations General Assembly and suggested that the demonstration be suspended to allow for future engagement.

“I am here to plead with you that, at least if the purpose is served, can we call it off and allow ourselves to go and rest? The President has left for the UN General Assembly,” Mr Gbande appealed.

He assured the protesters that the government would soon arrange a meeting between the group’s leadership and the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, insisting that the anti-galamsey fight required collaboration between state institutions and citizens.

But his request was met with hoots and rejection. The movement’s members argued that the administration had shown little political will to end illegal mining and insisted that only sustained civil pressure could protect Ghana’s water bodies, forests, and farmlands from further devastation.

The standoff underscores the growing frustration among Ghanaians over the state’s handling of galamsey, which is widely viewed as an existential threat to the environment, public health, and future food security.
