ECG will not be privatised – Mahama assures organised labour

President John Mahama has firmly stated that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will not be privatised, easing public concerns about the future of the state-owned power distributor.

Speaking at the May Day celebrations at Black Star Square on Thursday, May 1, Mahama acknowledged challenges in the power sector but ruled out a sell-off of ECG, instead advocating for a public-private partnership (PPP) model to improve efficiency.

“It is not my intention to privatise ECG as an institution,” he declared. “Our attention is more on a public-private collaboration to inject efficiency into our downstream electricity distribution system.”

He cited mismanagement over the past eight years as a major reason ECG is struggling, with debts rising to GH¢68 billion, threatening the viability of the entire energy sector.

Mahama explained that PPPs could address inefficiencies and help reduce power tariffs by improving service delivery.

He pointed to the Enclave Power model from his previous administration, where a private entity managed metering and billing in the free zones enclave with a 99% collection rate—while ECG still retained ownership and supplied power.

“They pay ECG monthly on time,” he said, highlighting it as proof that private sector collaboration can boost performance without losing control.

Mahama ended his remarks with a firm assurance:

“Electricity as an institution will not be privatised.”

His comments come as Ghanaians express increasing concern about rising electricity costs and recurring service issues across the country.
