A Metro Mass Transit bus travelling from Bunkpurugu to Tamale came under armed attack in the early hours of Friday, October 10, 2025, leaving one person dead and three others with gunshot wounds.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:27 a.m. on the Duuklotuk–Nakpanduri highway, when a group of armed men attempted to flag down the moving bus using torchlights.
According to eyewitnesses, the bus driver, sensing danger, refused to stop, prompting the attackers to open fire on the vehicle, hitting several passengers.

“The armed robbers didn’t block the road with any object. They stopped the bus with torchlights, and when the driver refused to stop, they started shooting at the back of the bus. The place where it happened was not a community-based location,” an eyewitness recounted.
The deceased and the injured were quickly transported to the Faith Community Hospital in Nakpanduri for emergency medical care.

Surviving passengers expressed deep concern about the recurring early-morning departures of buses from Bunkpurugu to Tamale, which they say expose commuters to increased risks of ambushes and robberies on poorly secured highways.
Security analysts have in recent months raised alarms over a surge in highway robberies in northern Ghana, particularly during pre-dawn hours, when visibility is low and police patrol presence is limited.
The police are yet to issue an official statement on the attack, but residents are calling for enhanced security patrols and better lighting along major highways to prevent further tragedies.
