‘Change of Government Should Not Be An Opportunity For People To Misbehave’ – , Otumfuo Condemns Obuasi Clash

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has expressed strong disapproval of the recent violent clash between illegal miners and the military at the AngloGold Ashanti concession in Obuasi, which claimed nine lives and left several injured.

Speaking at the Manhyia Palace after being briefed by managers of AngloGold Ashanti, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II voiced his disappointment and called for immediate action to curb illegal mining activities.

“Illegal mining should not be encouraged by anybody—not even the government,” the Asantehene stated. “The change of government should not be an opportunity for people to misbehave. We live in a society where the law works, and I do not think this government will allow such lawlessness to prevail.”

The clash occurred when a group of illegal miners, locally referred to as galamseyers, reportedly encroached on the AngloGold Ashanti concession, leading to a confrontation with military personnel deployed to protect the area. The incident highlights the persistent challenge of illegal mining in Ghana and its associated dangers.

The Asantehene urged the government to take decisive measures to address the illegal mining menace and ensure stricter enforcement of mining regulations. He also called on security agencies to be proactive in maintaining law and order, emphasising that lawlessness should not be tolerated.

“Those who engage in these lawless activities must face justice,” he stressed.

The deadly incident has reignited discussions about illegal mining’s impact on Ghana’s environment, economy, and social stability. Stakeholders, including traditional leaders like the Asantehene, have been advocating for stronger interventions to end the practice.
