BoG to Roll Out New Cedi Notes for All Eight Denominations

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is preparing to introduce an upgraded series of Ghanaian banknotes covering eight denominations, including the GH¢1 and GH¢2 notes.

Governor Dr Johnson Asiamah disclosed that the upgraded notes would cover the GH¢1, GH¢2, GH¢5, GH¢10, GH¢20, GH¢50, GH¢100 and GH¢200 denominations.

The initiative forms part of what the governor described as a new banknote upgrade programme similar in scale to previous currency exercises.

“The Heritage Series will be based on the existing series. So, there will be a new upgraded note for the 1 Cedi, for the 2 Cedi,” he said.

He explained that the Bank was currently preparing a detailed programme for the exercise, including the modalities for its implementation.

According to Dr Asiamah, the public would receive detailed information ahead of the planned November 3 launch date.

He stressed that the announcement at the press briefing was intended primarily to alert the public to the upcoming exercise.

Asked by Kofi Nkansah of TechFocus24 how much the Bank of Ghana would spend on designing and printing the new banknotes, as well as the total value of notes to be printed, Dr Asiamah said the expenditure had already been budgeted for.

“It is something we planned since last year. And so we budgeted for it. We have everything documented,” he said.

He added that the expenditure would be audited and captured in the Bank of Ghana’s 2026 financial accounts.

“You get to have a record of every expenditure we make on the exercise in our financial accounts,” the governor said.
