Bank of Ghana’s Deputy Governor Urges Women to Seize Leadership Beyond HR

In a powerful reflection on her career journey, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Mrs Matilda Asante-Asiedu, has challenged women to embrace leadership roles beyond the confines of human resources, communications, and corporate social responsibility — roles where they are often celebrated but too often confined.

Speaking passionately, Mrs Asante-Asiedu affirmed the importance of these roles, describing them as essential and deserving recognition. Yet, she cautioned against limiting women’s leadership to those areas alone. “True leadership is not confined to certain departments; it can emerge from any corner of an organisation when courage and preparation meet opportunity,” she said.

Her own story embodies that message. Fifteen years ago, she traded a high-profile media career for what many saw as a step backwards — a communications role in a little-known bank with just three branches. What followed was a journey of reinvention. Stripping away the comfort of expertise, she immersed herself in banking, learnt from colleagues younger than herself, and retooled with skills in financial systems and risk management.

That bold decision eventually opened new doors: she spearheaded the Women’s Banking Initiative, built Access Bank’s retail and private banking arms, and rose steadily into strategic leadership. Today, as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, her message is clear: “Real growth never happens in the comfort zone. It comes when we dare to take risks, when we embrace the unknown, and when we commit ourselves again and again to the discipline of continuous learning.”

Mrs Asante-Asiedu urged boards and organisations to move beyond symbolic appointments and open up real spaces for women in finance, risk, strategy, and innovation committees, where the future of organisations is truly shaped.

Her lesson to women was equally direct: “Leadership is not given; it is taken. Do not shrink yourself to fit in. When the table is too small, build a bigger one.”
