The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced the postponement of the national launch of its Cedi@60 anniversary celebration, originally slated for Friday, August 8, in light of the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight prominent Ghanaians, including Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr Murtala Muhammed.
The postponement comes as President John Dramani Mahama declared a three-day national mourning period from Thursday, August 7, to Saturday, August 9, to honour the victims of the crash that occurred in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.
Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, in a solemn press briefing on Wednesday, August 6, confirmed that Dr Omane Boamah and Dr Murtala Muhammed were among those who perished in the ill-fated Ghana Armed Forces aircraft, which was en route from Accra to Obuasi before going off radar and crashing.

Also among the deceased were:
- Dr Samuel Sarpong, former Ashanti Regional Minister and National Vice Chairman of the NDC
- Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
- Samuel Aboagye, former Member of Parliament and parliamentary candidate
- Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, pilot
- Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu
- Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah
According to a statement issued by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) on Wednesday, the helicopter was officially reported missing during its flight from the capital to Obuasi. All contact was lost before it was later discovered to have crashed and burnt beyond recognition, as confirmed by eyewitness accounts aired on Onua TV.
The BoG’s postponement of the Cedi@60 launch underscores the gravity of the national tragedy, with the central bank indicating that a new date will be announced after the period of mourning.
The government is expected to release further details regarding state funeral arrangements for the deceased in the coming days.
