Bagbin Rejects ‘Headmaster’ Tag, Defends Leadership in Parliament

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has dismissed claims that he is treating Members of Parliament (MPs) like students following his recent decision to suspend four MPs for improper conduct.

Addressing the House on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, Speaker Bagbin expressed disapproval of such assertions, emphasising the importance of discipline in parliamentary proceedings.

“Some members of the House have referred to me as a headmaster, treating honourable members like students. I reject that assertion,” he stated.

However, he added, “Where there are students, there must be a headmaster. If you don’t have a headmaster, you know what is going to happen to the school.”

Quoting a Latin phrase, he reminded MPs of their responsibilities, saying, “To whom much is given, much is expected.” He further urged lawmakers to uphold their titles with dignity, stating, “You are not called Honourable for nothing. They expect so much from you. And don’t forget that there is life after Parliament.”

His comments follow the suspension of four MPs, a decision that sparked debate among lawmakers and political observers. While some saw it as necessary for maintaining order, others argued it was excessive and undemocratic.

However, after appeals from both the majority and minority leaders, who assured that the MPs were remorseful, Speaker Bagbin lifted the suspension.
