Amazon has officially entered the satellite internet arena with the successful launch of its first 27 Project Kuiper satellites, marking a significant step in its $10 billion initiative to provide global broadband coverage.
The satellites were deployed into low Earth orbit on April 28, 2025, aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
This launch initiates Amazon’s plan to deploy a constellation of 3,236 satellites aimed at delivering high-speed, low-latency internet access worldwide, particularly targeting underserved and remote regions.

The company has confirmed initial contact with all satellites from its mission operations centre in Redmond, Washington, and anticipates beginning customer service later in 2025.
Despite entering the market later than competitors like SpaceX’s Starlink, which has already launched over 8,000 satellites and serves more than 5 million users globally, Amazon is positioning Project Kuiper as a formidable contender. The company emphasises its deep consumer product experience and established cloud computing infrastructure as strategic advantages.
To meet the U.S. Federal Communications Commission’s requirement of deploying half of its satellite constellation by mid-2026, Amazon has secured 83 rocket launches through partnerships with United Launch Alliance, Arianespace, and Blue Origin. The company also plans to offer affordable consumer terminals priced under $400 to facilitate widespread adoption.
As Project Kuiper progresses, Amazon aims to bridge the digital divide by providing reliable internet access to areas lacking connectivity, thereby expanding its reach in the global telecommunications market.
