AMA Starts Major Decongestion Exercise in Accra’s CBD Today

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in collaboration with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, has commenced a citywide decongestion exercise today, Tuesday, May 20, targeting key commercial and pedestrian hotspots in the Central Business District (CBD).

The initiative, which forms part of broader efforts to restore order and improve sanitation in the capital, will begin with strategic zones around the AMA Head Office. Specific locations include Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and Opera Square to Adabraka.

In an interview with Citi News, AMA Public Relations Officer Gilbert Ankrah revealed that the operation would intensify along routes stretching from Wato Junction through the King Tackie Tawiah School to Cow Lane.

“The plan is straightforward, with the main focus on the areas surrounding the AMA Head Office. All zones within that enclave will be addressed. Attention will also be given to the Accra City Hotel and Mövenpick Hotel areas,” Ankrah stated.

Ahead of the exercise, AMA Chief Executive Michael Kpakpo Allotey met with street hawkers in the CBD, appealing for cooperation and voluntary compliance to avoid confrontations.

“I am pleading with you to assist us in cleaning up the city and restoring order. We all want a better and more organised environment, and cooperation is vital in achieving that goal,” he urged.

Mr Allotey also hinted at future economic reforms to accommodate traders more sustainably.

“Our upcoming 24-hour economy policy will create new opportunities for you to sell your goods overnight. But for now, I plead that we stay off the pavement as we carry out this important cleanup.”

The decongestion effort is expected to pave the way for smoother vehicular and pedestrian movement and ensure a cleaner, more orderly Accra.
