AMA Empowers Traders to Arrest Litterbugs in Accra
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has urged traders across the Greater Accra enclave to help enforce sanitation regulations by arresting individuals who litter public spaces.
The Assembly said the move forms part of intensified efforts to keep Accra clean and improve sanitation across the metropolis.
Speaking in a phone interview on the Hot FM Morning Drive, AMA Public Relations Officer Gilbert Nii Ankrah said assembly officials could not be present at every location at all times, making public cooperation essential to the success of the sanitation campaign.
He said traders had therefore been encouraged to take action against people who deliberately dump refuse on the streets and other public spaces.
According to him, anyone caught littering could be arrested and dealt with in accordance with the relevant sanitation regulations.
Mr Ankrah stressed that maintaining a clean city required collective responsibility, urging residents, traders and businesses to support the Assembly's enforcement efforts rather than leaving sanitation solely to government officials.
Addressing concerns about the lack of refuse containers in some areas, Mr Ankrah said the Assembly would begin placing refuse bins at strategic and convenient locations to make it easier for residents and traders to dispose of waste properly.
He also assured residents that measures were being taken to improve the frequency of refuse collection.
He explained that periodic collection would help prevent waste from accumulating and reduce the stench and other health risks associated with uncollected refuse.
The AMA PRO appealed to Ghanaians to make proper waste disposal a personal responsibility and cooperate with the Assembly's sanitation initiatives.
He said the collective efforts of residents and authorities were necessary to achieve a cleaner and healthier Accra.
