Africa Accounts For 95% Of Global Malaria Deaths — AU
African Union (AU) Commissioner for Health, Ambassador Amma Twum-Amoah, has disclosed that Africa accounts for approximately 94% of global malaria cases and 95% of malaria-related deaths.
She said the figures represent the devastating impact of malaria on the continent, with children under five, vulnerable families, and national economies bearing the brunt of the disease.
Speaking at the African Union Extraordinary Health Summit in Accra on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, Ambassador Twum-Amoah said the statistics must serve as a reminder of the urgent need for stronger interventions to eliminate malaria and improve health outcomes across Africa.
“Africa carries approximately 94% of global malaria cases and 95% of malaria deaths. Behind these figures are children who never reach their fifth birthday, families pushed deeper into poverty, and economies deprived of human potential,” she said.
She called for sustained commitment, increased investment, and stronger collaboration among African countries and development partners to address the continent’s persistent health challenges.
The African Union Extraordinary Health Summit is bringing together health leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss strategies aimed at strengthening healthcare systems and improving preparedness for current and future public health threats.
