The tragic incident occurred on October 1, 2025, when six individuals entered the old mining pit to work but were trapped after it caved in.

The Amansie enclave, known for widespread illegal and small-scale mining activities, has recorded several similar accidents in recent years, raising concerns over lax safety practices and weak regulatory enforcement.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the St Martin’s Catholic Hospital mortuary, as police and local authorities launch investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collapse.

This latest tragedy follows a similar incident at Kasotie in the Atwima Mponua District, where seven people died and five others were injured after a mining pit caved in just days earlier.

The spate of deadly pit collapses has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of mining regulations, reclamation of abandoned sites, and intensified public education on safety protocols to prevent further loss of life.
