Gomoa Central MP, Hon. Kwame Asare Bediako, popularly known as A-Plus, has delivered a blunt assessment of Ghana's perennial flooding crisis, insisting that politicians alone cannot solve the problem unless the country confronts long-standing failures in town planning, zoning and urban development.

Speaking during a Facebook Live broadcast in the wake of the recent floods that devastated parts of Greater Accra, A-Plus argued that successive governments have largely resorted to symbolic gestures instead of addressing the structural causes of flooding.

According to him, political leaders often visit flood-hit communities wearing boots, conducting inspections and expressing sympathy, but fail to implement the difficult decisions needed to permanently resolve the crisis.

"The politician will never solve your problem," he declared, adding that Ghanaians would likely return next year to have the same discussion because the underlying issues remain unresolved.

A-Plus praised the Member of Parliament for Tema East, Isaac Ashai Odamtten, popularly known as John Dumelo, for what he described as honesty in explaining that certain damaged infrastructure, including bridges, could not be repaired immediately until the dry season.

He said leaders should be truthful with citizens rather than make promises that cannot be fulfilled.

Referring to the President's aerial inspection of the flood-affected areas, A-Plus acknowledged that while such visits demonstrate concern, they do little to eliminate the root causes of flooding.

He argued that Ghana's drainage systems were designed decades ago for a much smaller population and are now overwhelmed by rapid urbanisation.

According to the Gomoa Central MP, drainage infrastructure built for a population of about six million people is now expected to serve more than 35 million residents, making flooding increasingly difficult to prevent during heavy rainfall.

He further blamed poor spatial planning, accusing authorities of allowing settlements to emerge without proper zoning or infrastructure.

A-Plus lamented that communities are often established before roads, drainage systems and other essential services are provided, creating major challenges for future development.

"The only thing that can solve this problem is proper town planning," he said, stressing that countries without effective planning systems struggle to achieve sustainable development.

He acknowledged that demolishing structures built on waterways and unauthorised locations could help reduce flooding but questioned how such an exercise could be undertaken after thousands of families have already settled in those communities.

A-Plus also raised concerns about development around the Weija Dam, warning that authorities must continue carefully managing water releases to avoid creating an even greater disaster downstream.

He concluded by urging Ghanaians to confront the realities behind the country's flooding problem instead of expecting quick political solutions, insisting that without disciplined urban planning, enforcement of zoning regulations and long-term infrastructure investment, flooding will remain a recurring national crisis.
