47 Hospital Commissioned Outside Agenda 111 Under Akufo Addo’s Government—Fatimatu Abubakar Reveals

Minister for Information and Spokesperson for the Government Transition Team, Fatimatu Abubakar, has commended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration for making significant strides in Ghana’s health sector.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, January 4, 2025, Abubakar emphasised that the government’s approach to healthcare improvements has been both holistic and impactful.

According to her, the president has commissioned at least 47 hospitals since assuming office in 2017, excluding projects under the Agenda 111 initiative aimed at expanding Ghana’s health infrastructure.

She highlighted that in the past two months alone, the president had commissioned 10 hospitals, separate from the government’s flagship Agenda 111 program. This initiative was launched to address the healthcare gaps identified during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it was discovered that 87 districts lacked district hospitals and adequate referral points.

“For instance, in the Upper East and Volta regions, eight districts had no district hospitals,” Abubakar explained. She also noted that some of the newly created regions initially lacked regional hospitals, while facilities in areas such as Koforidua and parts of the Western Region were in dire need of upgrades.

Abubakar highlighted the medical drone delivery system as a game-changing innovation under the Akufo-Addo administration. The system, which ensures the timely delivery of essential medical supplies to remote and underserved areas, has been particularly beneficial in saving lives.

“I believe for those in the villages who would have died but for a shot of anti-venom or a pint of blood, they would appreciate some of these interventions,” she stated.

The minister’s remarks underscore the administration’s efforts to bridge healthcare access gaps and improve health outcomes across the country. From commissioning new facilities to introducing technology-driven solutions, the government’s focus on enhancing the healthcare system has drawn praise from various quarters.

As the Akufo-Addo administration transitions out of office, these achievements serve as part of its legacy in strengthening Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure.
