You’ll be ejected if you become an obstacle – Agric Minister warns staff

The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has issued a strong warning to employees within his ministry to avoid any actions aimed at sabotaging the government’s efforts with partisan politics.

The minister delivered the caution during a meeting with staff from various directorates, which was part of his ongoing tour of departments and agencies under the ministry.

Speaking on Monday, January 27, 2025, Eric Opoku emphasised that the time for politics was over, urging staff to focus on the nation’s development, regardless of political affiliations.

He stressed that Ghana’s progress should be the primary goal of all employees within the ministry, irrespective of their party lines.

“The politics is over. You may belong to whichever party. At the end of the day, we’re talking about Ghana and how to govern our country. So let us hang our political jackets and mobilise all that we have,” Opoku asserted.

He further warned, “If you’re still in the political mood and you think everything is about politics, then you become an obstacle. And every obstacle must be cleared. You can’t say that because you do not belong to this party; you want to work to sabotage the government. I will not entertain that.”

Opoku’s warning comes at a time when the agricultural sector is faced with significant challenges that require the collective effort of all employees. He urged staff to put aside political differences and work towards the common goal of improving Ghana’s agriculture sector, which is vital to the nation’s economy and food security.

As part of his working tour, the minister, accompanied by the chief director of the ministry, Paul Siameh, has been engaging with various departments to understand the challenges faced by staff and to explore potential solutions for the sector’s development.

Opoku made his first stop at the Plant Protection Regulatory Services Directorate at Pokuase. He emphasised the importance of utilising the expertise of the directorate to enhance plant yield and reduce the need for importing produce such as onions and tomatoes from neighbouring countries.

This initiative is expected to contribute to Ghana’s agricultural self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on imports.

The minister also visited the Statistics Research and Information Directorate (SRID), the Directorate of Agricultural Extension Services (DAES), and the Human Resource Directorate at the Ghana House in Accra.

He intends to continue engaging with the ministry’s staff to identify areas for improvement and to foster a collaborative environment to address the challenges facing Ghana’s agricultural sector.

Through these interactions, Eric Opoku aims to galvanise the ministry’s staff to support the government’s agenda of transforming the agricultural landscape and ensuring sustainable growth in the sector.
