Hon. Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, the Member of Parliament for Bosome Freho in the Ashanti Region, has called on journalists to uphold the highest standards of professionalism in their work.
Speaking in commemoration of World Radio Day, the MP acknowledged the crucial role radio plays in promoting national cohesion and fostering unity.
He noted that since 2012, February 13 has been globally recognised as a day to celebrate the contributions of radio to society.

“Mr. Speaker, since 1935, when radio was established in Ghana to serve as a liaison between the Crown and the Colony, it has played a pivotal role in shaping our national history. From supporting our struggle for independence to serving as a voice for coup plotters and, above all, as a beacon of democracy,” he remarked.
Hon. Ayeh also addressed past challenges faced by journalists, highlighting the criminal libel law that was previously used to suppress press freedom.
He credited the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, under President John Agyekum Kufuor, for repealing the law, noting that President Nana Akufo-Addo, who was the Attorney General at the time, played a key role in that process.
However, the MP expressed concern over the misuse of radio by some journalists to propagate hate speech, misinformation, and propaganda on critical national issues.
“Mr. Speaker, we must not allow radio to be used to incite violence, undermine national cohesion, and erode trust in our democratic institutions,” he warned.
He, therefore, urged journalists to honour their profession by practicing with integrity and responsibility.
“I call on our journalists, for whose sake the criminal libel and sedition laws were repealed, to uphold the highest form of professionalism in the discharge of their duties,” he emphasised.
